1964
was a great year for baseball. Even though Philadelphia fans cringe at
the collapse of their beloved
Phils, both the
NL and
AL went wire-to-wire with several teams in each league. In the National
League: St. Louis, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, San Francisco and Milwaukee
were all separated by only 5 games! In the American League: New York,
Chicago and my
Orioles were only separated by 2 games! Eventually, the Cardinals and
Yankees played in the World Series as the Redbirds
prevailed behind Game 5 and Game 7 victories by Bob Gibson.
With this history in mind and with the help of
Strat-o-matic baseball fantasy sports games, I have begun to
attempt to see if I can manage the Phillies and the Orioles into the post
season! I will be posting the week-by-week standings of this 1964 re-created season
shortly.
Records in parenthesis indicate wins / losses for the
week.
Prior to 1969, baseball teams were all lumped
together by league (American and National) with no
divisions.
Amazingly
after 1 week of play, all ten teams in the American League were only
separated by 1 1/2 games! The surprising Kansas City Athletics were tied
with Minnesota, Washington, Baltimore and Detroit. After April 27th 1964,
there were new leaders that began to distance themselves. The Twins
(5-0)
forged ahead by a half game led by Bob Allison (.476; 6 HRs; 17 RBIs) and
Earl Battey (.405; 2 HRs; 8 RBIs). On the mound, Camilo Pascual
(3-0; 0.78 ERA) was stifling Junior League hitters. In Kansas City, the
Athletics (4-1)
used balanced pitching and an offense led by Dick Green
(.366; 2 HRs; 6 RBIs) to stay close early on. Green in
later years would manage the team in Oakland that won 3 World Series
Championships '72-74! Torrid Floyd Robinson (.485; 8 BBs) is pacing the
White Sox (4-1)
as Joel Horlen (2-0; 0.00 ERA) and Gary Peters
(2-0; 3.86 ERA) lead Chisox hurlers.
1964 AMERICAN
LEAGUE ARCHIVES
In contrast, the National League leaders have
distinguished themselves from the rest of the pack after
1 week of play as only 2 teams were only separated by 2
games. The Reds (5-2),
have won 10 of their first 13 games and have been led by
Frank Robinson (.313; 2 HRs; 8 RBIs) Deron Johnson (.300;
4 HRs; 11 RBIs) and Marty Keough (.292; 2 HRs; 8 RBIs.
Starters Joe Nuxell
(2-0; 0.00 ERA) and Billy McCool (1-0;
0.61 ERA)
have been hard on Senior League hitters. In Pittsburgh, the
Bucs (5-2)
have kept pace by winning 8 of 13 games. Their front 4
starters: Steve Blass, Bob Veale, Joe Gibbon and Bob
Friend have each won 2 games with ERAs under 2.50! Jim
Pagliaroni (.594; 3
HRs; 9 RBIs), Manny Mota (.579; 1 HR; 4 RBIs) and Willie
Stargell (.406) have been blistering opponents. Jerry
Lynch has bee clutch at the plate and has 12 RBIs early
on. Milwaukee
(0-4)
has been on a slide of late but have received offensive
support via Denis Menke (.410; 1 HR; 8 RBIs) and from
Yankee skipper Joe Torre (.395; 3 HRs; 11 RBIs). Tony
Cloninger(2-1; 2.84 ERA)
has led Brave hurlers.
